A free online social deduction game

Betrayal—also known as Betrayal.io—is a free strategy video game wherein you get to act in a high-stakes murder mystery story. Developed by End Game Interactive, Inc., this 3D browser game is an online multiplayer mystery game where up to 12 players work together to solve who among them is a betrayer to the crew.

Similar to other social deduction games like Werewolf, Town of Salem, and Among Us, Betrayal features different maps, cosmetic items, randomized roles, and a chat system to help you discuss with your teammates. Its biggest drawback, however, is its lack of tutorials.

Is Betrayal.io a good game?

Betrayal is highly similar in gameplay to the popular multiplayer game, Among Us. You’re dropped into a map of either your or the room host’s choosing—along with several other players—and you’re given a random role that dictates your win conditions. For the Crewmates, the goal is to survive and complete all tasks—voting off the Betrayer, if necessary. Meanwhile, the Betrayer must disrupt them and kill all Crewmates.

What’s different here is that there are two additional roles: the Sheriff and the Jester. The Sheriff is similar to a Crewmate but will also die if they vote off someone who’s innocent. The Jester, on the other hand, must pretend they’re the Betrayer and be voted off to win. Aside from these, there’s not a lot of new mechanics if you’re familiar with games like this.

There are multiple game modes and maps, as well as Seasons that offer different limited-time events and maps. You can also freely customize your avatar’s appearance and even buy clothes and accessories if you wish. Also, you can play without an account—although your progress won’t be saved. However, unlike Among Us, there’s no tutorial to let you practice on the maps and minigames. You also can’t create a public room.

Can overwhelm beginners

All in all, Betrayal is a nice change of pace if you wanted more content in Among Us or are tired of the social-heavy aspect of Town of Salem. Not only does it have more roles and cool minigames, but it also supports cross-platform play with its mobile versions. However, first-time players will get a little confused for a while—even if they have experience with this gameplay—as there’s no tutorial.

PROS

  • Four random roles
  • Up to 12 players
  • Different game modes
  • Highly customizable avatar

CONS

  • No tutorial or practice mode
  • Can’t manually create your own public room
